My husband brought this home from the St. Vincent de Paul. What is it? You place a candle in it and then it magnifies and focuses the light... but for what purpose?

It looks like something a 19th century doctor would use. I think I saw a show with a doctor using something like that to operate on a patient.
It reminds me of a smaller version of what might have been found in a lighthouse.
